After updating to iPadOS 26 AirDropping a file from my Mac automatically opens the file in Preview and downloads it to Files. Is there any way to return to the previous behavior where you're asked which app to open the file with -- avoiding Preview/Files?

I have done that and the AirDropped files still go into Files and open with Preview. One issue is that I often AirDrop pdf's but they aren't always meant for the same app. Sometimes I need them in ForScore, sometimes in Notability. I would like to avoid the Files app altogether and have the files open directly in the apps they're meant for.
If you wish to open an AirDropped file in a specific App, you may need to first save the file to the Files App - and then either open the file from the preferred App, or using the Open With option from the Files App.
From the Files App, touch-and-hold the file to expose an action menu. From the menu, select Open With - and from the sub-menu, select Open With Quick View (or your referred installed App).
