No text notification sound on iPhone and Apple Watch near each other

Anyone else not getting text notification sounds when the iphone and apple watch are near each other? I'm sitting at my desk with the iphone 16 pro max on it's mag safe charger and the apple watch ultra 2 on my wrist and I'm not getting any text notification sounds. If I don't see the text appear on the iphone I miss the text. I've contacted applecare and they seem to be clueless. I even unpaired the watch and repaired it and it didn't help.

Where notifications appear

Notifications will appear on your Apple Watch or iPhone, but not both.

If your iPhone is unlocked, you’ll receive notifications on your iPhone instead of your Apple Watch.

If your iPhone is locked or asleep, you’ll receive notifications on your Apple Watch, unless your Apple Watch is locked.

Some apps, such as the Noise app, are only available on your Apple Watch. Notifications for these apps won’t appear on your iPhone.

  • The red notification icon will appear at the top of your watch face when you have unread notifications. If you want to hide the notification icon, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap Notifications, then turn off Notifications Indicator.

When you read or dismiss notifications on your Apple Watch, they’ll also be also dismissed from your iPhone.

See the attached picture. This is how my iphone is on it's charger. I'm wearing the Apple watch ultra 2. When a text comes though I get no notification sound. I've read multiple articles about this and done a lot of trouble shooting. Nothing is helping this issue. I wish Apple would send out an update so notification sounds would come though on the phone and the watch but it seems like they are spending all of their time working on the transparency screen and AI instead of issues the common user has.

That is how they designed it whilst wearing the watch.

  • Phone unlocked, ie looking at the lit phone screen, sounds on phone only,
  • Phone locked, including in standby mode, sounds on Watch only.

You can make notification sounds ALWAYS go to the phone, but you will LOSE them off the watch.

in iPhone, Watch app, My Watch tab, Notifications, Messages, set to Custom, Notifications off.

repeat for all apps

Have you considered using Haptics set to Prominent on your Apple Watch as opposed to any sound? I long ago moved to Haptics, which works reliably and no one near is remotely aware I'm being notified of anything. You can change to Haptics in the Watch App on your iPhone or in the Settings App on your watch.

I assume the watch is on your wrist, not on charge. I am not aware that being in Standby Mode chamges anything but test it with the phone face down on the table instead, or charging vertically.

Also there are notification settings in iphone Settings, Standby you could try, ie Show Notifications - On, Show preview on tap only - Off.

I have limited experience, I only have the phone on standby charge when the Watch is on charge and I am asleep. Any notifications that DND allows go to the iphone.

(and wake me up, Thanks grand daughter!)

I don't use AOD on my iPhone, so I'm not qualified to troubleshoot this for you. I'd recommend contacting Apple Support for help. If you're in the US, you can call then at: 800-MY-APPLE or tap the support button at the bottom of this page.
