My Project in the Downloads Folder Disappeared Overnight (No Time Machine Backup)

Yesterday, the project I was working on in my Downloads folder last night was completely gone when I woke up in the morning. Only one folder remained, and inside it there was just a single file. I didn’t even shut down the computer — I only turned off the screen and put it into sleep mode. What can I do? I don’t have Time Machine.
