Finder on iMac M1 not updating file dates correctly

My 2021 iMac M1 (Tahoe 26.1) finder is not updating files dates properly.

I have tried timezone, security & privacy & general settings (& restarted) but the finder is still making up file dates from (sometimes) years ago to files that I was working days ago.

any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I can't trust my finder to record the latest iteration of my files which I send out to my supplier for printing

Are the files located in your Documents folder or on the Desktop? Do you have iCloud Drive enabled and syncing Desktop & Documents folders? Are the files located on a network share? More details about where the files are stored would be helpful.

I just opened and modified a Word (.doc) document from 1995 in LibreOffice and saved (overwrote) it as a Word doc. The creation date did not change (Aug 4, 1995) but the modified date was the time it was saved. The last opened date did not change from Feb 2025. Had I saved that file to a new document, its creation and modified dates would be identical to today. That is normal.

When you single-click on a document in the Finder and then press option+cmd+i what dates do you see on the information panel? What do you expect?

Thank you for your assistance. My files were saved as from a previous iteration of an Indesign file to a new project folder. When I navigated to the new folder the timestamp was incorrect despite my reopening it, saving it and even making a minor text revision to initiate a date change but the timestamp was still wrong. After many restarts and a p-ram restart my finder seems to be correctly archiving now.
