How do I fix AirPods crackling and fading out after iOS 26.1 update on iPhone 12?

I upgraded to ios26.1 and have issues with with Airpods since then. The sound will start crackling and then fade out. Tapping my home screen, not even unlocking seems to bring it back but then it will deteriorate again. I have an iphone 12 and Airpods Pro. I have tried restarting my phone, unpairing and repairing the Airpods and no change.
