Apple Watch Ultra 2 overestimates run distances

Hey all! This last August I updated to an Apple Watch Ultra 2 from a Series 9, which is now being used by my fiancee. We run pretty often and I personally take it seriously, so I wanted the upgrade for the Ultra 2 robustness.

However, over the course of the last few months, I noticed that the Ultra 2 actually performs worse than the Series 9, constantly overestimating my running distances. For example, in the last two weeks alone we've done two races:

  • A 12k, for which the Ultra 2 computed 12.34k and the Series 9 12.08k
  • A 5k, for which the Ultra 2 computed 5.10k and the Series 9 5.03k (which also matched the numbers on a few different Garmins).

It's super frustrating that a device that is newer, more expensive and supposedly more accurate actually underperforms compared to the base model Series 9. I've read that the dual-band GPS is more sensitive and might "wander" more often, which leads to over-tracking.

This might not seen like much but these extra few hundred meters make it harder for me to track my running and fitness goals appropriately.

Has anyone else ever had this issue? Is there any way around it? Things I've tried in the past

  • Turned on Precision Distance
  • Made sure Location Services and Movement/Distance Calibration are on
  • Reset Calibration data and done those 20 minute calibration runs

Your stride and step count is also a part of measuring the distance when you run.

So, if you are just walking along a known, measured distance, you will see, if the GPS of the watch is correct, instead of your running cadence maybe having an effect on the distance.

I did use the odometer of my bicycle to measure the distance of my running/walking course before using it for walks and runs with my watch.
