Can't get or open text messages on iPhone

I've tried turning iMessage on and then off again. iPhone is linked to my Mac computer, and the text eventually shows up there and stays open when I open and read them.

Both iPhone and Mac have been updated to Version 26.1

completely close out of the message and then do this Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
