Sound output not working to another device

iPad Pro 5th generation: I cannot get the sound to output to headphones or external speakers using hard wire. Swiping from upper right I do not get a menu that gives me options or choices like so many online videos show, while music is playing from Music or Pandora or DJ. I am using a USB-C to USB-A connector. I can use a BlueTooth Receiver, but I am an Audio Pro whose gold standard for reliability is hard wire.

After reviewing the AI info in your link, the iPad Pro Audio Settings for Mono was turned "On." When I turned that "Off" - not only did it solve the problem, but it is permanently solved, as I cannot recreate the problem by turning it back "On" evne after disconnecting and re-connecting both devices.

The result is I am "practically speaking" - happy, yet mentally perplexed. I kept written notes so it is not likely I confused anything - but always a possibility.

You perhaps miss the point that I was attempting to highlight...

The TRS plug of your Y-splitter (having just tip, ring and sleeve - 3 connections) is not suitable for use with the Apple USB-C to 3.5mm TRRS connection that has 4 connections. The Y-Adapter with just three connections will internally short the Apple adapter's sleeve and adjacent ring - or the two rings.

The fix is to obtain a Y-splitter that has a TRRS (four pole) plug that is correctly wired for the Apple Adapter - and two 3.5mm output connections (these being either as TRRS or TRS as needed). If necessary, you may need to wire-up a suitable connector yourself - requiring some soldering skills).

Let's go one step further:

Now I am trying to send my music to two separate powered speakers for a large audience gig coming up. I am plugging in a Y-Splitter with 3.5 mm Stereo Mini plug connections. Both speakers accept line level signal, which is what the Pro puts out (so, either one can be powered successfully with the Adaptor). But no so for two at the same time. The signal comes out of one speaker or the other, depending on which is plugged in first, or the one that remains plugged after the first is unplugged becomes active.

I understand the Pro generates a TRRS (Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve) type signal, but I thought the Dongle Adaptor would take care of that since it worked so well with TRS (Tip- Ring- Sleeve). It does not, so do I need another piece of equipment/connector here?

That's very informative, thank you, and, Y-Splitter is not shorting as it works fine with other devices.

What I am really asking is not WHY, but a practical solution. There must be other DJ's using iPad Pro for music who have same need and have gotten over this limitation. If not, it may be time for audio pro's to consider iPad Pro's music abilities carefully before purchasing.
