How do I fix unbearably slow typing in Mail app on iMac?

Question

Typing in Mail is unbearably slow. Seconds elapse between each key touch! Typing works fine in everything else.

I have a 4T drive and 40 GB memory. iMac 27" Ventura 13.7.8.

This happened once before and just went away by itself. Yes, multiple restarts, etc.

Oh, now I see that this seems to apply when I'm replaying to a sender using a proton mail address! All other emails type fine.
