Apple TV remote not turning on Apple TV

For the last week or so, my apple tv remote won't start up my apple tv until I unplug it and plug it back in. It'll then work normally for the day - able to turn on and off via the remote without a problem. Invariably, by the next morning it's no longer working and I have to restart via unplugging and plugging back in.

I've had the apple tv for just over a year, so I don't think it's an issue with sleep settings (as I haven't touched those). Was there an update recently that might be causing this? Any advice on how to resolve this so that the remote is able to always turn on the apple tv?
