Why is Apple Mail constantly trying to download messages?

Thanks for your suggestion. It is my gmail account that seems to be causing the problem. I deleted it and the 'Downloading Messages' notification disappeared. Once I added gmail the notification started again. I restarted Apple Mail at each step. So it may be something to do with gmail rather than Apple Mail.
