How to stop notification pings from disturbing phone calls?

Hello ,I recently switched from Android and need help with notification volume during phone calls. While on a call, notification blast at full volume, which disrupts the conversation and makes it difficult for both me and the person I'm speaking with to hear. I need to keep notifications enabled because of work, so turning them off isn't an option but during calls the volume is too loud. Would like to know how to manage the problem.

There are two categories of volume control on iPhone:

On a telephone call or listening to media.
Ringer, alerts and other sound effects.

This paragraph from the iPhone User Guide explains how to lower the volume of the second category.

”When you’re on a call or listening to songs, movies, or other media on iPhone, you can use the buttons on the side of your device to adjust the audio volume. Otherwise, the buttons control the volume for the ringer, alerts, and other sound effects, unless the ringer and alert volumes are locked in Settings.”
