MacBook Messages shifted to one at a time

The attached screenshot I hope will explain this better. How can I get back to "normal" Macbook messages. It does not do this with my iPhone.

THIS IS HILARIOUS! A half hour after I sent my last email it all came back!!! I noticed the Message app on my desktop. It had this little black curved arrow in it. I tapped on it. VOILA! Guessing something happened with my dozen attempts to get it to work!!

This is what my iPhone messages look like and what I am trying to get to with MacBook. I have been given four or five solutions for this via sidebar which for all I can do, will not show up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
