Black Screen on 2016 MacBook Pro

I have a 2016 MacBook Pro 13 inch laptop. I can only open it partially before the screen goes black. Can anyone tell me what is happening and if this is an inexpensive repair?

Troubleshooting Black Mac Screen:

Open with this Plugged In or Not Plugged In:

What happens when you lift the screen when the charger is plugged in, and when not plugged in?

Troubleshooting Mac Power:

A. Black Mac Screen:

(Applies to Intel Based Macs Only): Sometimes operations are performed and then the keyboard settings become manipulated, technically. So... Try resetting. Then reboot with this keyboard plugged in once more. If you only have USB-C ports then this is the adapter to use: USB-C to USB Adapter - Apple

B. Mac Power Issues:

Try a New Charger:

If it is currently charging from a charger, then use a new charger:

C. A Few Links to Refer to Power:

The fragile flex cable for the Display Assembly is bad & requires having the whole Display Assembly replaced which is very expensive (it is a known & common issue for the 2016 & 2017 models).

Personally I don't recommend people spending any money to repair any of the 2016-2020 Intel Macs with USB-C ports for multiple reasons (this is one of those many reasons). The money spent on repairs is much better put towards a new laptop.

If you want to continue using this laptop, then connect it to an external display (you may need to use Clamshell Mode in order to actually get video on the external display).

Come to think of it, here's a bit of a trick:

Clear the caches for powering on your Mac:

Hold down the following key all together when attempting a power on. It fixes this for many I work with...

  • [fn + F5 + option + power button]
  • [shift + fn + F5 + option + power button]

Thank you for the followup reply.

Power Issues When Plugged In:

Then that would indicate this is a power surge or power spur issue with the power adapter. Are you using a different charger than the original one? If so, is it of third-party (not Apple brand)? Using a new charger of Apple brand may do just fine. But, just know to use one that is of the correct wattage. Enter your model here: Adapters - Charging Essentials - Mac Accessories - Apple

Reset the SMC and NVRAM:

Then reboot with this keyboard plugged in once more. If you only have USB-C ports then this is the adapter to use: USB-C to USB Adapter - Apple
