Apple Mail formatting is inconsistent and impossible to fix (font sizes, bullets, styles) — has anyone found a real solution?
Hi everyone, I’m having major issues with Apple Mail’s text formatting on macOS, and I can’t tell if this is a bug or just how Mail works — but it’s making it very hard to write clean, professional emails.
These are the problems:
MIXED FONT SIZES: Even if everything is set to Arial 13, Mail splits my message into “Arial 13” and “System Default 13”. They look different.
Things I have already tried:
- selecting all and forcing the font
- using Command-T
- clearing formatting (Option-Command-T)
- converting to plain text and back
- pasting without style
- rewriting the text manually
None of these actually unify the formatting.
BROKEN BULLET LISTS: I get empty bullets I cannot remove, bullets that reappear, lists that won’t end, or bullets that come back when I press Enter.
Things I have already tried:
- Format > List > None
- Backspace/Delete in every possible combination
- clearing formatting
- rewriting the list
- Still broken.
STYLES THAT WON’T RESET: Even when pasting without formatting, Mail keeps hidden HTML spans, which create inconsistent line spacing, indentations, and mixed fonts.
RECIPIENTS SEE DIFFERENT SIZES: Even if everything shows as 13 pt for me, recipients in Gmail/Outlook/iOS see the text much smaller. I’ve tried System Default, Arial 13/14, Helvetica, resetting the zoom — nothing fixes it.
My questions:
- Are these known issues in MacOS and/or iOS mail?
- Is there any reliable way to force ONE consistent style?
- Is there any way to remove bullets cleanly?
- How do I stop Mail from mixing “Arial 13” and “System Default 13”?
- Or is Apple Mail simply not reliable for formatted emails?
I’ve already tried every basic solution, including all formatting resets. I’m looking for deeper workarounds or explanations.
Thanks in advance
