iPhone Mail storage not freeing up space after deleting emails

My iPhone storage is using 22.18 GB for my mail only. I deleted the emails, and I emptied the trash, but that did not free up any space. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help. Gregg

I might suggest that you delete any email that you don't want on the mail server, since it probably IMAP then delete the email account in Mail and re-add it, since this will probably delete the cache(s) in the iPhone, since once you add the account back into Mail it will redownload all the emails that you have on the server and you will not being save any space you are trying to recoup. Save the attachments that you have to either a external SSD or iCloud or some other storage medium that won't take up space on the iPhone.
