Cannot Sign In to Apple Account - “Verification Failed“

I have a new iPhone 16e running iOS 18.7.2. I have set it up by copying data from a iPhone 12mini. Data transferred ok, but I cannot sign in to my Apple account on the 16e - error message is “Verification Failed”.

I believe many others have had this problem. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
