Used credit card in Apple wallet on iPhone, tapped at gas pump. Printed receipt transaction total was correct $15.59, Apple wallet transaction total said $176. How/why did this happen? Pending charge in credit card account matches printed receipt.

Does the gas station put holds on gas purchases? Have you discussed the matter with the merchant?
The merchant inputs the price, not your iPhone, not Mastercard or Goldman Sachs. Clerk probably wouldn’t know, but store manager may be able to see transaction and explain the charge.
Never heard of a transaction hold of $1 at a gas station. Here in Florida, a hold of $75 to $150 is common. Not sure where you are, but don’t see how a $1 hold protects the gas station from drive offs. Did you ask the merchant? It’s a simple 2 minute conversation.
credit card is tapped/swiped/inserted and approved BEFORE you can start to pump gas, gas station not concerned about driveway, that’s why they have pay at the pump. Gas station clerks would have no idea why the transaction amt on my Apple wallet card was completely different than what showed on the pump and my printer receipt.
Hold is usually for a dollar, never for more than $150 over purchase. Didn’t find the erroneous transaction amount in Apple Wallet until an hour after I got home. Charge pended correctly to my credit card account. Will see what final charge is posted. Have used tap to pay with cards in Apple Wallet multiple times, never had this happen before.
