App specific password not generated because it won't verify my email

I just got the new Alexa 11 inch and am trying to add our iphone calendar to it so that it'll display on the home screen. In the Alexa app, it asks me to provide an app-specific password from Apple. Every time I log in to do that, I get all the way past the two-factor authentication step and it takes me to "verify your email address." When I put my apple id email address in, it gives me an error message. It also gives me an error message if I try a different email. I've tried this on my phone (safari), my Windows PC (google chrome), I've cleared my cookies. Nothing works. Any ideas?
