The iMac login password is not necessary.

Here is how to prepare and transfer a Mac:

What to do before you sell, give away, trade in, or recycle your Mac - Apple Support

Most of that can be performed remotely, as well.

The Apple Account password associated with Activation Lock is necessary.

If the Apple Account password is unavailable, it’ll either need to be recovered, or the original purchase receipt presented to Apple as part of requesting Apple remove Activation Lock.

And again, the macOS login password doesn’t matter here.
