How to disable Copilot from Office on Mac?

I have a MacBook Air with macOS Sequoia 15.6.1 and I have Office version 16.103. Today I noticed a Copilot icon at the bottom of my word document. I have tried to enable and disable the 'connected experiences' and after restarting Word, nothing changed. I cannot see a Copilot icon in 'Authoring and Proofing tools' or on the ribbon at the top. How do I fix it? I do not want anything to do with Copilot.

Many thanks!

To disable Copilot on a Mac, go to Preferences > Privacy in any Office app, find the "Connected experiences" setting, and uncheck the box. Some versions may show a dedicated Copilot setting in Preferences > Authoring and Proofing Tools or Preferences > General, where you can simply uncheck the "Enable Copilot" box. After making the change, you may need to restart the Office app.

Method 1: Adjust Privacy Settings

  1. Open any Microsoft Office application (like Word).
  2. Go to the app's menu bar and select the app name (e.g., Word) > Preferences.
  3. Click on Privacy.
  4. In the "Privacy Settings" dialog box, find the setting for "Turn on optional connected experiences" and uncheck the box.
  5. Restart the application to apply the change.

Method 2: Adjust Authoring and Proofing Tools Settings

  1. Open an Office application (like Word).
  2. Click on Preferences in the application's menu bar.
  3. Navigate to Authoring and Proofing Tools and select Copilot.
  4. Clear the "Enable Copilot" checkbox.
  5. Close and restart the application.

If the options are not available

  • Some newer Office versions on Mac may not have the Copilot checkbox visible yet.
  • If the option is missing, check your app's Privacy settings, as disabling "optional connected experiences" may enable the specific Copilot toggle to appear in the Authoring and Proofing Tools settings.
  • You may need to wait for a software update that adds the control. You can check for updates via the "Help" menu in any Office app
