macos 11 big sur incompatable with google chrome 2025

I can not upgrade my macbook late 2014 above macos 11 (big sur), but i get incompatibility warning in google chrome "you need macos 12 to receive updates; this computer uses macos11".

This seems to suggest i must acquire another later model macbook but no dinaro for that :(

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.7

Certain older versions of Brave remain available for download.

Start here:

Excerpt for the OP:

"The last supported version for users on macOS 11 Big Sur will be Brave version 1.80.125 and Chromium 138."

I deliberately omitted the direct download link because OP should read about it first.

You have a choice of Vivaldi, Brave, and Firefox as alternative browsers with the first two being Chromium based. At some point even these browsers will stop receiving updates.

FYI, because the Internet & online services are constantly changing.....any apps on an outdated & unsupported OS will sooner or later have their online components no longer function properly. How long such apps are supported depends on the developers, but many developers follow Apple's lead & only provide updates to their third party apps for about three years for each version of macOS. Those developers used to support older outdated operating systems a bit longer, but this changed a few years ago probably since Apple makes it hard for them to keep their apps compatible & secure.

You should be asking Google this question, not Apple. It is Google that decided to do this. Developers are responsible to keep their software compatible with macOS, not the other way around. Google has decide to stop support for Chrome on older version of macOS.

What don't you understand about this?

Instead of thinking you have to buy a newer model MacBook you should be thinking about using a different browser that continues to support macOS Big Sur.

Thanks for the update. I thought I had recently seen a post on this forum saying the current version of Brave was compatible with Catalina. Probably misunderstood. I knew I should have checked.

I just check Vivaldi, and it seems the last version compatible with macOS 11.x Big Sur was version 7.5.x back in August where it used Chromium v138.x. I thought I had installed an update patch for Vivaldi on Big Sur more recently, but I guess I was mistaken. I cannot find the Vivaldi stable version 7.5 to download, but here is a development snapshot from August that should be Ok to use on Big Sur:

Unfortunately I cannot find any links to the official stable releases.
