The error indicates that the TLS/SSL certificate used by the associated website/service is untrusted. Without additional information, it is impossible to provide a definitive explanation - however, there are two principal candidates:
1) The Certificate chain of trust is broken - with the Root or Intermediate CA certificates having an error or are themselves invalid.
2) Your TLS/SSL session is being "inspected" by a third-party or security proxy - breaking the trust chain. Deep-packet inspection of TLS/SSL traffic is common in Enterprise/Business/Educational network environments.
Either way, the error is a warning that the session is not secure. Other than contacting the associated Security Administrator for advice, there is little that you can do yourself to resolve the issue.
As a first step, clear your cached website data:
Settings > Apps > Safari > [History & Website Data] Clear History & Website Data
Nest update your iPad to the latest version of iPadOS - at the time of writing, this being iPadOS 18.7.2 (or, optionally, to iPadOS 26.1) - and then reassess.
Many thanks for your reply. I had researched the issue and found that information, which is why I’m trying here. The message is random, rather than persistent - it disappears when I cancel it.
This issue cropped up about three days ago. The message appears about every 10-15 minutes, and isn’t linked to any particular activity. I don’t recognise the website/service as one I have ever (knowingly) had a connection to. I wondered if this could be linked to a hacking attempt?
I have cleared cache (again) and updated to 18.7.2. The error message is still appearing.
