Creaking hinge noise on MacBook Pro

Hi everyone, I have a MacBook Pro 14, and recently the hinge started making a creaking sound every time I open or close the lid. The laptop hasn’t been dropped or damaged. Is this normal?

The sound isn’t extremely loud, but it’s noticeable and happens every time. The laptop hasn’t been dropped, hit, exposed to liquids, or opened from one corner. The hinge area looks perfectly fine with no visible damage or misalignment.

I’m wondering:

– Is this type of hinge noise normal for the MacBook Pro 14?

– Could it be a sign of a hinge or internal mechanical issue?

– Has anyone had this happen, and did Apple fix it under warranty?

– Should I take it in for diagnostics now, or observe it longer?

does not seem normal. If it gets worse it seems you run the risk of damage compared, to a simple adjustment.

the hinge is a internal mechanical issue.

for hardware issue— your best bet is take it in

It would not surprise me if the Display Assembly is binding on the Top Case/Keyboard/Palmrest Assembly. There is very little space between them on the M-series Macs. The one I worked on today had the Display Assembly drift to the one side as I tightened the screws no matter how I aligned it. While I thought the Intel USB-C Macs had a close tolerance, they had a canyon of space compared to the spacing on the M-series Macs.

If it is within 14 days of purchase, I would return it for another one, otherwise like the others have mentioned, you need to have Apple or an AASP examine the laptop. Definitely get the issue on record & keep your records in case nothing is done at this time.

Your appointment for a hardware issue at an Apple-owned store is free, in warranty or out.

Those folks put their hands on these computers all day every day, and they have typically "seen it all".

If there can get your Mac working in a modest amount of time without expending any parts to do so, there is generally no charge.

They are not out to make money from Service. Apple wants you to be a happy customer, if possible.
