Should I repair a liquid damaged MacBook Pro 13” M1 2020 or buy a new one?

My MacBook Pro 13” (M1, 2020) purchased in aug 2022. just went down the service team diagnosed motherboard corrosion (likely liquid damage).

The repair quote? ₹60,000+.

They even suggested it’s not worth fixing a base model at that price and that getting a new MacBook would make more sense. I do work as a UX designer uses figma and adobe.

Still thinking if I should repair it or invest in a new one any thoughts from fellow Mac users?

Searches and a currency converter site suggest that ₹ is a symbol for Indian rupees and that ₹60,000 is roughly $676.30 USD.

A new 13" M4 MacBook Air with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD is ₹119,900. A new 14" M5 MacBook Pro with that amount of RAM and internal SSD space is ₹169,900. (Both according to Apple's India Web site.). (The U.S. Apple Store site has a lot of Certified Refurbished M4 MacBook Airs for sale, but there does not seem to be any Certified Refurbished section on the Apple Store India site.)

So the cost to repair that 13" M1 MacBook Pro will be at least half of the cost to buy a new 13" M4 MacBook Air that's reasonably well-equipped, or at least a third of the cost to upgrade to a higher-end 14" M5 MacBook Pro.

It's your choice, but I would not throw half the cost of a M4 MacBook Air at a water-damaged M1 MacBook Pro. Especially if it is one with only 8 GB of RAM, or only 256 GB of internal SSD space.

If there has been liquid damage and motherboard corrosion, you are looking at a motherboard replacement – at the very least. (What if you replaced the damaged motherboard, and some other part that was corroding, but that had not quite failed at the time of that repair, then failed?)

Motherboard replacements are pretty expensive – and that 13" M1 MacBook Pro is perhaps mid-way through where its useful life would be even if it wasn't damaged.

As for feature differences between that Mac, and current Mac notebooks, you can find many of them here:

repairs typically have a 90 warranty only.

You will have to do the math if it is a cost effective option in relation to your budget.

The AppleCare+/AppleCareOne covers partial expense of accidental/liquid damage if you have it/ or available in your region of the world...(?)
