Transferring music library to a new PC with Apple Music app

Hello,

I am trying to work out how to transfer my music library from my old PC (Windows 10) to a new

PC (Windows 11), using the Apple Music app.

Earlier this year iTunes seemed to be discontinued as a way of managing music (it now, for some

reason, only manages podcasts and audiobooks), and I was required by Apple to install and use the Apple Music app. This has been fine for listening to my music, but now I have a problem to which I can’t find a solution.

The problem is that all the instructions about transferring my music library to a new PC talk about

using iTunes (which no longer works), including instructions to consolidate my files in the iTunes folder. See for example these instructions on the Apple support web pages:

Move your iTunes library to another computer – Apple Support (UK)

Despite lots of Google searching, and searches on this forum, I have been unable to find any instructions

on how to do this using the new Apple Music app. Nor (apart from one unanswered query on this forum) have I even found any reference to this being an issue! Which suggests it could be me being an idiot.

And just to be clear, I am talking about my CD collection which (many moons ago) I ripped to

my PC. I don’t have an Apple Music subscription, and don’t stream music from Apple Music.

So, can anyone advise me how to achieve this? I have my external hard drive waiting and ready

to go …

Many thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Dave

  1. iTunes has not been discontinued at all. If you downloaded any of the new Apple Apps, such as Music, TV or the Devices App it will restrict iTunes to only Podcasts and Books. You can return iTunes to full functionality by deleting all of those apps from your PC.
  2. If you wish to continue to use Apple Music, music migration works the same way as in iTunes. Exactly the same. You can copy the library to the new PC and then press and hold the shift key while starting the Music App and point the Music App to the location of the iTunes Library.itl file.

It's certainly interesting that iTunes hasn't been discontinued for music. All I recall is that earlier this year I opened iTunes and got a message telling me that all my music was now in the Apple Music app, and that iTunes was now for podcasts and books (not verbatim, but this was the gist). So I dutifully downloaded the Apple Music app, and since then have not had access to my music through iTunes. So you are saying that if I simply delete the Apple Music app, all my music will return to iTunes?

Yes, if iTunes issued that message it was because one of the 3 new Apple apps was installed. TV, Music or Devices apps It might not have been the Apple Music app, but possibly the TV App or Devices app.

Yes, uninstalling all 3 Apple apps will return iTunes to full functionality.

You say that if I choose to continue with the Apple Music app, music migration works exactly the same as in iTunes. So my question (which doesn't seem to be addressed in the link you have helpfully provided) is how do I consolidate my files? According to the Apple instructions this seems to be critical first step, but is dependent on being able to choose file - library - organise library - consolidate files. These options don't exist in Apple Music, and this is what's really confusing me.

If it's not already consolidated, then the process is much harder, still possible, but much harder, as you need to recreate the folder layout you had before so the Apple Music app can find it.

If you must consolidate it, then you will likely need to return to iTunes before migrating to Apple Music so you can consolidate the library.

Given that Apple seem to want everyone to use the Apple Music app rather than iTunes, it seems odd that their only official instructions for migrating music relate to iTunes, with nothing comparable for the Music app.

In theory, the Music App should automatically Migrate the library if it exists on the computer and is consolidated. So this consolidation process is only necessary if the library is not in a single location and off of the main drive of the PC.

Otherwise, the migration should be automatic and everything should be available in the Music app when you open it the first time.
