How to remove auto fade from midi? Fade out shows on screen but volume of notes unchanged

I'm a fairly regular user ( at low level!) of GB and roughly know my way about. I've come across midis which fade out at the end and usually I can go to the note editor and I see the "descending staircase" of volume.

However, now I have a midi where there is def fadeout but the note volumes have remained unchanged and there is no staircase coming down to indicate the fade. I've attached a couple of screenshots where the bass track is highlighted..

In the pic you can see the fadeout on top right pretty much as normal and at the bottom the note editor ( you'll just have to trust me that the individual note volumes haven't changed). You can also see that the volume automation doesn't have the descending staircase. I have no idea what the controller is at the bottom - don't recall that being there before - but I've switched it to show note velocity and if I click on any of the notes beside it I get the same note volume as the rest of the song so no fade.

I've never needed to use the master track for this before but I include below an image of it.

I've removed fades manually loads of times before - time consuming but effective. What is the workflow now? Any help would be appreciated.
