Black bars on the side of screen in iMovie

I'm editing a video for a YouTube project, and while editing these black bars all of a sudden appeared on the sides of screen. The videos playing are against a black screen, and the videos have the opacity filter on. I don't know how to get rid of them. This has never been a problem, and this has become frustrating. Is there anyone who could help?

Hi, I'm experiencing something similar. I shot footage in portrait mode so it could be uploaded to instagram and it still had large black bars on each side (and was tiny). I went back into iMovie, selected entire project, cropped to fit and rotated it. So all black bars gone, saved as it was while entire project was "on its side" (with 916 at the end of title), exported it to files. Then opened in Quicktime and rotated entire file. Seems to have worked, although I haven't uploaded it yet as iMovie has decided to poo itself again and won't export anything.
