Convert All my MS Word and Excel files to Pages and Numbers

I am getting rid of MS Office 365. I have a lot of Word docx and Excel xlsx files that I want to convert to Pages and Numbers. I know how to open a single docx file with Pages, and save to .pages format.

However, I want a solution to convert ALL my MS office files to Pages and Excel in one batch, so that the next time I click on one, it automaticallly opens with either Pages or Numbers. Is there a way to batch convert all my files? Hopefully, I don't have to open each one individually and save in the Apple format?

Apple's Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are not Microsoft clones and a sobering amount of features that Microsoft put into these applications over nearly 40 years are simply missing in Apple's applications. That means that some documents may not convert, or drop features, or perform font replacement if a referenced font is not physically installed on macOS. Apple does not guarantee the accuracy or completion of any document translation by its applications.

If you plan to professionally share any converted content, you will need to export it to the Microsoft formats (another translation) and that will strip any unique features you may have added using Apple's applications. Apple does not state what release of Microsoft Office their export is intended to be compatible. Many people have had issues sharing exported Word content from Pages with those using Microsoft Office applications.

Alternatively, and provided you are on macOS Sonoma (14.*), Sequoia (15.*), or Tahoe (26.*), you can get the single purchase version of Microsoft Office 2024 for Mac Home for around $129 at Stacksocial dot com. I just did that myself and the license key works for me on Tahoe 26.0.1. Then you have absolute native document compatibility with none of the hold your breath translation issues using Apple's applications.

Most of the scripts and Apple Shortcuts that I have written were to batch process existing Pages documents to PDF. It is another issue entirely where one has to launch Pages and let it attempt to translate a Word document to Pages. The slightest unsupported Word feature and the batch process goes toes up. I have never written anything to batch process Excel files to Numbers. Same potential for disaster there too.
