A mud 2011 iMac can update to macOS 10.13 High Sierra.

If you are running something earlier than OS X 10.11.* (El Capitan), you may need to use a modern computer (Mac or PC) to download the .DMG file for the El Capitan installer, or the Sierra installer, and put it onto a USB drive. That is because really old versions of Mac OS X / macOS may not be able to handle modern https security protocols, or to access the App Store.
Downloading one of these .DMG files onto a USB drive will not create a bootable installer. The USB drive is just a way to get the .DMG file to the old Mac, so you can use it there. Once the old Mac is running El Capitan or Sierra, it probably will be able to access the Support article and the App Store link for High Sierra.
