Tahoe 26.0.1 Update issue - Mac Book Pro, Apple M2 Pro Chip

Why does my Mac Book Pro ask for a password when I try to install macOS Tahoe 26.0.1? Additionally password is disabled on this Mac.

if you have changed settings on your Mac so that it 'logs in automatically', that does NOT remove the password required for the first or only Admin account created when you first start up MacOS. That is the Admin password.


The Admin password is required when you make major changes, install Apps, and especially when you want to update or Install MacOS.

A. macOS-to-macOS Upgrade Process:

Because that is part of the configuration process. You wouldn’t want someone trying to format your computer without your permission. Think of it as Apple looking out for you. Go here, if you need to reset it: If you Forgot your Mac Login Password - Apple Support


B. As for Formatting with Disk Utility:

If you are trying to format your hard drive, then being prompted for a password infers that it is an encrypted drive, and you need a password to perform the formatting process.

Yes, I get a prompt when attempting to download macOS Tahoe 26.0.1. I have never been asked for a password in the past when downloading updates, so why now? See screen shots below. Based on the issues that I'm seeing it appears there is a systemic issue with update 26.0.1. I appreciate your feedback.


I get the prompt as soon as I click on Update Now. I input the password and its says its not correct.


I'm not trying to format my hard drive, macOS Tahoe 26.0 is already installed. Just simply trying to install the latest update 26.1
