Slight creaking sound when holding MacBook Air M4

Hi everyone,

I’ve noticed a very light creaking sound coming from my MacBook Air M4 when I hold it in one hand or use it on my bed. It sounds like metal slightly rubbing against metal — very subtle, not loud at all. When the MacBook is on a flat hard surface, there’s no sound.

Is this normal for the aluminum chassis, or should I be concerned?

Thanks in advance!

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 15.7

Since you say it’s a “very light creaking” and only when you hold it in one hand or use it on your bed, I’d lean toward it being benign — likely caused by flex in the aluminum or internal parts shifting slightly. Especially since the machine appears fine when on a flat hard surface.

However — because you can still be under warranty (assuming it’s a relatively new MacBook Air M4) and because some users have had more serious outcomes (loose screws, misalignment), my recommendation is:

  • Keep an eye on it for the next few weeks.
  • If the sound gets worse, more frequent, louder, or you notice other symptoms (bulge, hinge resistance, trackpad change), contact Apple or get it inspected.
  • To feel safer: book a Genius/Apple-authorized service appointment and show them the noise. If they say it’s normal, fine. If not, they can fix it under warranty.
