On my MacBook, mail disappears after being read. Where does it go?

When I read my email, and then select another email to read the previous mail is tagged as read. Any mail deemed junk, I delete.

The following day, all of the mail that I had read had vanished from my inbox, along with the deleted ones. Mail that I have not read remains in my inbox.

If I search mail by recipient/sender, I can see the read mail for that recipient/sender.

Sounds like you just have the "Unread" filter turned on.

At the top of the Mail window click on the icon with the 3 lines, it should be shown in blue. That will turn off the unread filter and show all mail, read and unread.
