iCloud files not downloading to desktop on new Mac

I got a new computer and used migration assistant. Everything transferred over and I see all my folders in icloud.com, but when I go to open them on my actual desktop, nothing is inside. I've tried clicking them and using "download now" that hasn't worked. I've gone to system preferences and checked and unchecked icloud boxes and that hasn't worked! Any tips?! Of course my issue doesn't warrant a visit to the apple store
