If your intention is to connect your iPhone (with a Lightning port) to an external monitor or TV, you might use the Lightning to Digital AV Adapter - and connect using an HDMI cable:

  • Lightning Digital AV Adapter

This Adapter also provides opportunity to connect a USB Power Adapter to simultaneously charge the iPhone.

HDMI is for video only.

Using your internet and mirroring your iPhone screen are 2 very different things. What are you trying to do exactly?

If you are trying to mirror the screen on the iPhone to the TV, then you can just use the Lightning AV digital adapter and an HDMI cable. With this, whatever you do only our iPhone will be shown on the TV.

If you are trying to share your internet connection from the iPhone to the TV so apps on the TV can access the internet, then you probably won't be able to do so over USB. If your TV has an ethernet jack, you may be able to share over ethernet, though unlikely. Your best best is to share the internet connection over Wi-Fi if your service provider supports Personal Hotspot.

Turn on Personal Hotspot on your iPhone's settings, and then look fo the iPhone's name on the Wi-Fi network page on your TV's settings.

To reiterate, all that you need to connect your iPhone to your TV is the Lightning to Digital AV Adapter and a standard HDMI cable - as already described.

Once connected, you can mirror your iPhone screen to the TV.

If your Smart TV supports AirPlay, you may also be able to wirelessly stream your media to the TV without even making a physical connection.

I recently had to cut cost down and had to disconnect my internet, now I find myself trying to navigate connecting my phone to the tv after I have used my hotspot data and will not have anymore till next month. I would like to watch my shows which is why I’m on here looking for direction. I’m leaving to Walmart soon to get what I need. Thank you

Unless your carrier has a different limit for Hotspot usage than your general iPhone cell data usage, you have in fact consumed your cell data limit too and will have no way to keep streaming things without incurring in heavy charges for overages your data limit.

If it does in fact have a separate limit for the different usage type, then you can use the AV adapter and an HDMI cable to mirror your iPhone's screen tot he TV and anything you play on the iPhone will be seen on the TV.

If you disconnected your home Internet service, and have also used up all of the iPhone hotspot data which your cellular carrier allows for the month, how do you expect to connect your smart TV to the Internet this month?

Share your internet connection from your iPhone - Apple Support

It doesn't matter whether you share your Internet connection over Wi-Fi, or over a USB cable. Either way you are using cellular data that counts against whatever hotspot data limit your carrier has set.

Note that Apple's directions for sharing Internet service over a USB cable assume that the device you are sharing the service with is a Mac or a Windows PC. I don't know if sharing over USB will work wth other devices like TVs.

Using your smart TV as an external display for your iPhone - or using your iPhone to provide an internet connection for the smart TV - are entirely different applications.

HDMI with a suitable display adapter will only extend the iPhone's display.

As for using the iPhone to provide an internet connection for the smart TV, Phil0124 has outlined some options within his reply.

Forgive me if I wasn’t clear on my intentions…but once I utilize all my hotspot data then I’d like to mirror my shows from my iPhone to my smart tv. I have “unlimited” data so I can still access the internet and apps on my phone after I’ve exhausted my hotspot data. My confusion was on which type of cables I would need. You have answered it I believe, I would need a lighting to HDMI that way I can mirror only the phones screen to the smart tv. Am I correct on that?

Thank you again for being so patient with me, I’m not tech savvy and appreciate the direction.
