Errors mounting any storage device on MacBook Pro

Suddenly the USB devices and SD Cards will not mount. The devices are ok but I get the error code 49223. What can I do? I can’t back up my data or copy any new data except by Airdrop or something else.

it’s Monterey, 13” early 2015. 12.7.6

My newer laptop is 14” 2024 on Sequoia, and the devices do mount.

a web search turned up this advice:

com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error 49223 on exFAT drives usually means unsupported allocation unit size. If you format a drive to exFAT on Windows, it may fail to mount on macOS because macOS may not support the allocation unit size given by Windows. That's why it's always recommended to format a drive to exFAT on macOS rather than on Windows if you need to use the drive with both Windows and macOS.

the web site I lifted it from is full of interminable ads for their software, some legitimate, some shady. So It is not an accident that I am not citing the source.
