ipod classic no longer connecting to M1 since sequoia

I've seen a lot of discussion of iPod 4th gen and older no longer connecting on Sequoia, but since upgrading my Mac M1 to Sequoia I haven't been able to get my iPod 5th gen to connect either. When I plug it in, the "hard drive" Ipod icon comes on in finder but once the iPod syncing screen loads the "hard drive" iPod icon ejects from finder and the iPod disconnects from the computer. Although the finder screen still says connected and shows the sync screen, the iPod itself no longer shows that it is connected (“do not disconnect” goes away and usual iPod menu reappears). I tried buying new cables but same problem. Has anyone encountered this and fixed it since 5th gen does supposedly still work on Sequoia?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 15.7
