I'm understanding that apple no longer makes external hard drives to watch DVD's. I have old home movies on DVD's that I would like to show to my kids. Does anyone have a recommendation as to a brand to purchase that will be compatible and is a good investments? Thank you so much!

hard drives are not the same as optical drives
the optical drives use a generic driver interface really so it's one size fit all, though you can experience issues with drives that expect to have their sole power input from the usb port which can be an issue
personally I've used asus, and lg and samsung ones with success
