External monitor showed three dots and then went black when connected to power.

I believe I'm not using the proper cable connected from the my large Apple monitor to my Macbook. Do I use the port on the back of the monitor that has the lightning icon to connect the two? And what kind of cable should I be using.

I rarely disconnect everything because of this issue.

Identify your MacBook Pro model - Apple Support

What model Apple display?

many Apple devices have their model numbers silkscreened in a nearly-hidden place with light gray ink. If not found, just post what you know, like diagonal size of display.

Please don't post any serial numbers, they attract vermin.
