Why is this my screen name?

I didn’t pick this screen name. It picked me. I don’t like it.

Haha. Same. Once I got past the surprise and confusion - and verified it hadn't arrived courtesy of a security breach - my unexpected rando alias kinda grew on me and I decided to keep it. (:

From what I understand, the moderators assigned it as a temporary placeholder after I requested a change. I did have an email from them with instructions on how to select a new one that I found accidentally some time later. Apparently, my mail filter miscategorized it. You might want to run a manual search on your inbox and check your spam folder in case something similar happened to you.

Cheers

When this happened to me, right after I requested to change my alias, I posted a question here expressing my concern that there may have been a database modification error when handling my request. This was the explanation provided to me by another forum member, who said it had also happened to them under similar circumstances. That member’s rank implied familiarity with the system and the correlation in empirical observations appeared corroborative, so I felt comfortable relaying what I’d been told.

I should know better by now not to prognosticate on a moderator’s rationale, even if I think sharing my direct experience would be helpful to OP. Moving forward, I’ll try to quietly stick with the wisdom modeled by @CarolB and U2: I’m not sure why or how. They move in mysterious ways.
