Disposal of Apple Airport tower

I have an old one that’s been out of Service for years. What’s a safe way of disposing? I’m concerned about old backup files on it

Sounds like you are asking about a Time Capsule, which was in effect an AirPort Extreme with a built in hard drive that was designed for storing backups using the Time Machine application.

If the Time Capsule is still operational, you could connect it your current network using an Ethernet cable and then use the AirPort Utility application to erase the hard drive.

The Apple Store, Best Buy stores as well as your local recycling center will accept the Time Capsule.
