encryption credentials expired

I am running High Sierra v10.13.6 on an old macbook pro. I tried to hook up to an HP 250 Officejet printer, but cannot complete a print job because of "encryption credentials expired". The printer is working from my iPhone and iPad. Just not the macbook. How do I fix this?

HP Printer Encryption Credentials Expired - Apple Community describes a solution.

Please be aware that the author of that Discussion made reference to "tech support at HP" who alleged a "virus in my drives" which is poppycock. Either the OP didn't actually contact HP or the alleged "tech support" representative was incompetent. Both are equally likely. Just ignore that passage.

Although I do not have that printer I watched their video and the solution it describes using the printer's embedded web server seems reasonable.

Thank you, John Galt. I was so frustrated. I somehow by messing around in the printer preferences window found the printer’s online connection. Don’t ask me how I got there. But my browser kept warning me to stop (bad certificates?), but I kept advancing. Eventually I got to the place where I could self-sign and overwrite the previous encryption credentials. (Note: my printer was refurbished). I did that, then unmounted and remounted the printer, and viola’! It’s now working! Thank you and the Apple Community. -Cal

Your're welcome Cal. Good work.

The thought of having to maintain a security certificate for a printer of all things is understandably maddening.

Loading the embedded web server a "Show Printer Web Page" button or something like that. Of course if the browser you're using doesn't support the printer's TLS encrypted webpage you can be stuck, but you found a way around it.

For future reference, hopefully ten years from now: Which Printer Should I Buy? - Apple Community. Personally I have excluded HP from future purchase considerations but the one you have is kind of a niche product worth keeping in service. You should be good for another ten years.
