iPad pro drops or delines to make calls through iPhone on same network

Recently my iPad Pro has intermittently declined to make calls through my iPhone - both are on the same WiFi network. This morning I initiated a call through my contacts list on the iPad. The call went through but after several minutes my audio went dead - I could not hear the person I had been speaking with, she could hear me but I did not know it until I called back. A message displayed on the iPad indicating the iPad and iPhone had to be on the same WiFi network to make calls from the iPad.

During the second call the same loss of audio occurred then the same message. The person I was calling called back and I was able to answer the call on my Apple Watch (with cellular) - the call did not appear on the iPad. Our call continued for another 10-minutes on the Watch without interruption.

I have experienced issues on the iPad where it would not initiate a call to a number selected from my contacts list - same message about the WiFi network.

Ihe iPad and iPhone are on the same version of iOS - 26.0.1.

VPN or Network Profile: If you are using a VPN on either device, it can interfere with local network traffic needed for Continuity.

Fix: Try turning the VPN off on both devices and testing the call.

Weak or Unstable Wi-Fi Signal: If the Wi-Fi signal is poor on either the iPhone or the iPad, especially if you are moving between different parts of your house or switching between Wi-Fi access points, the call can drop.

  • Fix: Try to stay closer to your Wi-Fi router during the call. If you have a mesh network or multiple access points, check your router settings for features like 802.11k/v (fast roaming), which can improve device handoff between access points.

Wi-Fi Assist/Cellular Auto-Switching (iPhone): Your iPhone might be switching the underlying data connection during the call.

  • Fix: On your iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data). Scroll all the way down and toggle Wi-Fi Assist (or Wi-Fi Calling) OFF. This prevents the phone from automatically switching to cellular data when the Wi-Fi is weak.

  • Reset Network Settings: This clears all saved Wi-Fi passwords and network-related settings (like cellular and VPN/APN settings) that might be corrupted.
  • Fix: On both devices, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings. (You will need to re-enter your Wi-Fi password.)
