Final Cut Pro transitions not working between clips on the same timeline

I’ve had this problem on multiple projects. I have two clips on the same timeline and they won’t transition together. Final Cut treats them like there is a gap between the two clips. I had two pieces of video that would not transition together. I ended up having to stack the two pieces of video and adjust their opacity as a work around.

I am guessing that you are talking about connected clips.

Try making these clips into a storyline.

Select both clips, and press Command-G. A grey "shelf" appears encompassing these clips, indicating that they are now made into a secondary storyline.

See if you have any problem adding the transition then.

Dissolve. Just a regular dissolve. Yellow handle. There is plenty of room for a transition . I figured it out. Apparently Multicam clips need to be on the primary storyline, which honestly doesn't make to much sense to me as to why that has to be. Very odd.

Multicam clips do NOT have to be on the primary storyline.

They can be connected, and they can be in secondary storylines. I have no trouble adding transitions to them, either.

Maybe there is some issue with your project, your library, or FCP settings; or maybe there is some misunderstanding.

As we have asked before, if you'd care to post a screenshot of a timeline showing the problem, maybe we can help you figure out what's wrong. Or you could share an xml of a minimal example, test project, so we can test.

Deleting FCP settings is a common troubleshoot step that often helps. To delete preferences, hold down command and option while starting the application and click Delete Custom Settings. The application will start with default settings and open an "Untitled" library. Adjust the settings, reopen the library you were working, and see how it works now.

The only time I see "Create Storyline" unavailable is when there are clips selected that are in the primary storyline.

If that is what you are trying, it makes sense that it does not work.

In that case, you could select the clip(s) in the primary, and do Edit->Lift from Storyline

(or press Command-Option-UpArrow). Then you'd be able to create storylines and apply transitions.

It will be much easier to understand what you are trying to do and why it does not work if you post some screenshots.

Yes and no. I tried to create a storyline with two clips and it is hit or miss. Meaning I go to create a storyline with two clips and sometimes it lets me and sometimes that option does not exist when I right click. It doesn’t appear on drop down menu. I am still baffled why I can not just add a transition to two existing clips on a timeline when they are next to each other. I’m not talking about one clip is on the main timeline and second clip is on a timeline above it. I’ve been a fc editor for a long time now, and this is new. I should be able to add any transition to clips on the same timeline and sometimes I can’t
