Apple family not sharing subscriptions with me

I have just been added to my partner’s Apple family. He has gone in and ensured all the family apps are shared - cloud, tv, music and arcade - but when I go into the family section on my phone, despite seeing him in my family section I cannot see any of the shared apps.

for info: I am not currently subscribed with anything other than iCloud.

what do we need to do for this to work as expected?
