Just to emphasize the point, the warranty clock starts when the third party purchased the device from Apple, not when it was gifted to you or when you set the device up. A device purchased over a year ago would no longer have any warranty left, whether it has been used or not.
Sorry, but I don't think that is entirely correct.
In this case, the OP was gifted an iMac from Amazon (which is an Apple Authorized Reseller). The key point is who Apple considers the “end customer.” If Amazon purchased the iMac from Apple, let's say on 1/1/2025, as part of its inventory, that transaction is between Apple and Amazon, not between Apple and the OP. If the OP is then gifted this iMac on 10/1/2025, their purchase date — for warranty and AppleCare+ eligibility — would be 10/1/2025, the day Amazon sold or transferred the iMac to them (even as a gift). That’s because the warranty always starts from the date the product is first sold to the end user by an Apple Authorized Reseller, not the date the reseller acquired it from Apple.
Of course, I could be wrong about this, but this is what I always understood was true.
