You can't upgrade beyond Monterey because that model MacBook Pro is not capable of running anything newer. You'll have to upgrade your MacBook to a newer model.

What apps will not download? Perhaps there are alternatives that will work with Monterey.

If you bite the bullet and upgrade your Mac do you absolutely need a laptop? What size screen do you currently have?

Monterey is not one of the "most recent three" versions of macOS supported by vendors such as Microsoft and Adobe. It fell off that list a little over a year ago, with the release of Sequoia.

It is still enough to run current versions of

These might help you extend the useful life of the machine.

However, if you need or want to run applications that require something more recent than Monterey, it might be time to replace that now ~9-year-old MacBook Pro.

3rd party app developers determine how “far back” they want to continue supporting. (there is a real financial cost to supporting the ever-diminishing pool of MacOS Old users)

Your situation is unfortunate but not unique. (nor is it unique to Apple … Win11 effectively “deprecated” many perfectly serviceable computers)

The “felt effect” is exacerbated by the quality of Apple’s premium hardware which almost always FAR outlives the software support.

MacOS Ventura users will be the next to face the same situation.

Since you mentioned "world [sic] documents", you may want to install LibreOffice – which can work with many of them.

Another possibility might be to use "Word for the web". You would only be able to use it when you had an Internet connection, and it might not be as full-featured as the desktop version that costs money. But it might work with a browser running on your Mac, where the desktop version of Office/365 would block new Monterey installs.
