Mac M4 and Flash Drives

I like/need to keep a flash drive connected to my mac all the time but my new mac has just the two ports on the back (why Apple, why?) - I have my monitor connected to one of the ports so that just leaves the one. I'd like to find an adapter/hub compatible with the mac for flash drives (docs, etc). I have one that works sporadically - sometimes the flash drive shows on my desktop, sometimes not so I'm not sure what the issue is there.

You can get M4 iMacs with either two or four multi-purpose USB-C / USB4 / Thunderbolt ports. It looks like you purchased the least expensive "stock" model, or used it as a starting point for custom-ordering, since the other three "stock" models all have four of those ports.

It looks to me like the $1299 model is a "price point" model. To save $200, you give up

  • Two CPU cores and two GPU cores
  • Two Thunderbolt / USB4 ports
  • Gigabit Ethernet (as standard)
  • A Touch ID sensor on the keyboard
  • The ability to drive two external monitors

The loss of two Thunderbolt / USB4 ports is probably the most significant practical sacrifice, but it is not the only one.
