Time Machine come funziona?

I have a Ventura 13.7.8. I have never understood how Time machine works, in the office I have a digital archive, an external memory where in a very intuitive way I transfer what I want to save from my computer to the external memory by physically transferring the files from one folder to another. I want to do the same with my Mac at home having a powerful external memory but I can't view the memory because the time machine recognizes me, which knowing how it works I would use it eventually. Help please.

Time Machine is not intended to function in the same manner as an external storage device. It has a dedicated purpose — to automatically and periodically create a restorable backup of your Mac's contents. It is intended to be a "connect and forget" backup solution, and works best if used that way.

You can use any inexpensive USB-connected external hard disk drive or SSD:

If you already have a hard disk drive at home, it should be erased before you can use it as a Time Machine backup disk:

We cannot use a Time Machine backup disk for general purpose file storage. For that, connect an external hard disk drive, and use it in the same way as your office computer.
