Have you tried a Safe Mode boot? Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

If you achieve a desktop in Safe Mode, let the computer "soak" in Safe mode for 20-30 mintutes before doing a regular restart. That gives Safe Mode time to do its appointed housekeeping.

Success there means the darkness was like a software or drive issue.

There is another at-home diagnostic check but it is not a fix:

— With the computer on, gently move the display back and forth on its hinge while watching the display.

— Any flickers or other signs of life suggest the cable that runs from the logic board to the display is worn.

If that test is positive, the good news is you have isolated a cause.

The bad news is that it requires an expensive professional repair that may cost more than any used 2018 Macbook Pro is worth. The entire hinged unit is one sealed assembly. Individual components are not separately replaceable. Should any single component fail or be damaged, the entire display assembly must be replaced.

We cannot quite costs but I have seen used/pulled displays for the model listed at almost US$400 for just the assembly. This Apple repair page shows your model as still supported but does show a cost for a display replacement without AppleCare coverage."Other damage" says US$299

➡️ If you decide to replace: If you computer still chimes on startup and the keyboard is active, you may be able to back up your drive contents to another Mac using Target Disk Mode:

Thank you for the photo.

Troubleshooting a Black Mac Screen:

A. Connect an External Display:

Connect an external monitor to your Mac, and see if you can see the builtin screen System Information…. If not, then either it is not connected or is damaged. If so, then it is likely a macOS issue (the drivers have gone missing), in which case reinstalling the macOS may solve this.

Which that Monitor on, confirm that the display is seen.

  1. Go to: Apple menu
  2. Hold Down: option key
  3. Select: System Information
  4. Expand: Graphics/Displays
  5. Verify that the Mac’s screen is seen.

B. Remove a Focus or all Focusses:

If you have a focus being used, if might be closing it, when you open it. So, see if you need to remove one, or remove them all, if you have no need for one: Set Up a Focus on Mac - Apple Support
